56. KRULIK, TERESITA & GERALD
AIRPORT GARDENS by Terry & Jerry Krulik, PUP TALK (Saddleback Valley Bromeliad Society), 17(8),
p. 8, August, 2010.

Airports used to be pretty sterile places, good for little except expensive shopping or eating.
Fortunately this has been changing, especially over the past decade. Many foreign airports now
have interesting displays of plants, in what can be called ‘pocket gardens’. Some of these like the
Singapore rooftop cactus and succulent garden, are very permanent. This one doubles as the
smoking area.

Singapore now has at least six specialized gardens, devoted to orchids, gingers, broms, roses, etc.

Other airports have displays, many moveable and changeable. Thailand has some especially nice
ones, as does the Philippines. Here are some shots we took in the Manila airport last fall. This
particular one focuses on bromeliads, which grow well in the hot humid climate there, even with
airport air conditioning. Other Manila airport gardens focus on water, orchids, and cycads, but the
broms of course are the best.
