65. KRULIK, GERALD, Ask Jerry: Conundrums Clarified for the Courteous Chlorophyllophile
(Gardener) Part 12,
CRAZY ANNIE PART THREE OF FIVE, PUP TALK (Saddleback Valley Bromeliad
Society), 16(9), p. 4, September, 2009.

Dear Jerry,

It’s me again, Annie the Cross-Pollinating Cloner. This time I think I have an idea that you will
approve of. The world can never have enough edible plants. So I will use my new and improved
skills to produce new fruits.

The ancient Indians were able to modify the lowly Ananas fruit to become the wonderful pineapple
of today. But all the other bromeliads are ignored! I think that there is a huge potential here, to
modify and develop many new types.

I considered doing the traditional tasks, of evaluating existing bromeliad fruits, inserting genes
for yield, size, color, and flavor, but then thought of an easier way. The commercial modern
pineapple is a hardy tasty plant. Why not just modify this fruit?

Here are a few of the ones I have thought of trying: avocodapple,  pinecherry, pineplum, pinepear,
applepapple, nectarapple, grapple, and bananapple. What do you think of my ideas now?

This is for real!

Signed
Annie the future farmer

Dear Still Crazy Annie,

Finally, an idea I can sink my teeth into!

I think you finally have something here. I would suggest a few additional ones. My own personal
favorite would be the cross of the durian, that spiky, smelly, utterly tasty tropical fruit tree, with the
pineapple, to give the durianapple. The durian fruit and the pineapple fruit look very similar, so
this might be an easy cross.

But for sheer commercial appeal, I think you should work on the perfect cross, the chocoapple. A
chocolate-flavored pineapple would be a huge success, I think. Then you can easily develop the
related pineapple- flavors, vanilla, mint, chili, beefsteak, and strawberry.

Glad to be your taste tester
Jerry the gourmet
